Ongoing research
  • Transition metal complexes that cleave DNA have lot of importance in medicine and biology. One of the goals of our bioinorganic group is to design and synthesize transition metal complexes, particularly of Cr(III), Ru(II), Cu(II) and Co(II) and Co(III), that has the potential to bind to DNA and promote DNA cleavage, either hydrolytically or oxidatively or photolytically. Currently there is lot of interest in developing molecules, that can bring about DNA cleavage in the presence of white light since these molecules can find potential application in photodynamic therapy of cancer. Efforts are also being made to design molecules which can recognize DNA bulge as well as hairpin DNA. We are also investigating if the ligand around a particular metal ion has any influence on the nucleobase specificity for the metal ion.
  • Chromium is known to exist in two thermodynamically stable oxidation states, namely, Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Chromium in its +6 oxidation state is known to be toxic. On the other hand, chromium in its +3 oxidation state is believed to be an essential element with proven role in lipid and glucose metabolism. A Cr(III) complex such as chromium tris-picolinate is being promoted as a micronutrient. Our group however, believes that all the Cr(III) complexes may not be very safe to be consumed as a micronutrient. Under some ligand environments, some of the Cr(III) complexes may generate free radicals under biological conditions. Some of the complexes may even give rise to Cr(V) species under biological conditions. The free radicals and Cr(V) species so produced may damage biomolecules like protein, DNA and even living cells. Our group is actively trying to understand the role played by the ligand and other factors in the biotoxicity of Cr(III)
  • In recent times there have been attempts by different groups to synthesize metal complexes that can cleave proteins. Metalloproteases have potential application in biotechnology and protein sequencing. Our group was one of the first to show that certain Schiff bases as well as certain Cr(III) complexes can bring about site specific as well as non specific cleavage of proteins. This work is currently being pursued with emphasis on Cu(II) complexes.
  • The group also has interest in developing synthetic strategies for the preparation of nano materials. Macromolecules have successfully employed as template for the synthesis of nano metal oxides. A protein like BSA has recently been employed as a reducing agent cum capping agent for the synthesis of silver nano particles. Biomedical applications of these nano particles too are of the interest of the group.
  • Leather industry produces large amount of effluent with very high COD. One of the goals of the group working in the area of environmental chemistry is to make use of transition metal complexes immobilized on many host materials (clay, zeolite, see weed etc) for destroying the organic compound present in the effluent. Degradation of dye molecules present in the discharge of dye houses is also being attempted. Materials for the photo catalytic degradation of organic molecules are also being synthesized.
  • The group also has interest in developing cleaner leather processing methods. To achieve this goal the group is working on the synthesis of novel, environmentally acceptable molecules, which has the potential to serve as a tanning/retanning agent.
Notable Accomplishments
Inorganic and Physical Chemistry:
  • Developed a novel template procedure for the Schiff base complexes of trivalent metal ion
  • Gave methods for stabilisation of unusual oxidation state of chromium viz. Cr(IV)
  • Established the importance of nuclear factors in substitution reactions of Cr(III)
  • Developed an electrochemical probe for characterization of micellar systems
Bio-Inorganic Chemistry
  • Synthesized models for the active site of water splitting enzyme of PSII (Photo System II)
  • Established the oxidation state of Mn in the resting state of water splitting enzyme of PS II
  • Established toxicity of Cr(III) in Fibroblast cells
  • Developed Cu, Cr, Ru, Co based artificial metallo nucleases and metallo proteases
  • Demonstrated the importance of the ligand structures in interaction of metal complex with DNA and Proteins
Leather and Environmental Sciences:
  • Developed eco benign tanning technologies
  • Successfully developed environment friendly treatment techniques for tannery effluents and solid waste management
  • Published several articles towards understanding the mechanism of tanning
