ZERO LIQUID DISCHARGE SYSTEM WITH HIGH ENERGY, FUEL AND MINERALISED MANURE RECOVERY USING TANNERY EFFLUENTS FOR GANGA ACTION PLAN

On the

ON

6th and 7th April 2015

CSIR-CLRI has designed, fabricated and demonstrated the concept of Bioenergy based Zero Liquid discharge system with submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor system treating tannery effluents for ganga action plan and demonstrated to The Hon‟ble Prime Minister of India during the \inauguration of all state  Environmental Ministers, all state pollution control board Chairman and Member Secretaries on 6th and 7th April 2015. The Zero liquid discharge system needs the pragmatic approach on RO Reject management using Anaerobic MBR through halophilic anaerobic bacterium and archaea for biogas generation from volatile dissolved solids in the RO Reject. This was followed by anaerobic digestion-based RO reject management system using the hydrolysate of organic Municipal solid waste with leather solid waste at optimum COD/Sulphate and COD/FDS (Fixed dissolved solids) ratio using submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (SAMBR). The salt tolerant hyper saline anaerobic digester was seeded with halophilic anaerobium in the two stage SAMBR followed by UASBr and Activated sludge process to reduce the COD/BOD/TDS for its compliance. This not only reduced the cost per Kg of COD/TDS/BOD removal, but also produced highly valuable biogas and power. After biogas recovery, the residual hypersaline anaerobic digestate which was creating disposal problem was managed and converted into mineralized manure using pressure filters with food waste aerobic composting method. Thus, the possibility of eliminating the highly expensive and non-carbon neutral Multiple effect evaporator consuming exorbitant quantity of wood for its salt crystalisation of RO Reject.
